mortise & tenon
functional integrity
This simple, strong connection has been a pivotal joint for millennia—from ancient pagodas to the pews of Westminster Abbey. The example below features a through tenon, which protrudes past the walls of the mortise, or cavity. Notice the two dark lines in the tenon, which are tiny wedges driven into the tenon designed to spread it tighter against the mortise walls, further strengthening the joint.
